GRP Reading Group Meeting

Research profile seminar

Reading group meeting arranged by researchers at the Gothenburg Responsibility Project.

Researchers at the Gothenburg Responsibility Project have formed a reading group together with associated philosophers and students where they discuss books and articles on relevant topics for their research. The group meets every two weeks.

This week's presentation is: Andreas Brekke Carlsson (University of Oslo) - "Attributability and Shame".

ABSTRACT: Following Gary Watson, it is increasingly common to distinguish between two kinds of responsibility: responsibility as accountability and responsibility as attributability. Accountability is normally taken to have stricter control conditions than attributability. It is controversial whether we are accountable for emotional reactions, unwitting omissions and actions from moral ignorance, while it is clear that we can be attributability responsible for such behaviour. A common way to argue for this claim is to point to differences in the harmfulness of blame: accountability blame can be seen as sanctions; attributability blame as evaluations. In this paper I will argue that this distinction is not applicable in the case of self-blame. To blame oneself in the accountability sense is to feel guilt and feeling guilty is to suffer. To blame oneself in the attributability sense, I will argue, is to feel shame. However, shame also entails suffering. If accountability and attributability have different control conditions, the explanation cannot merely be difference in the harm of blame. Instead, I will suggest that accountability blame and attributability blame are governed by different notions of appropriateness: an agent S is accountability blameworthy for X only if S deserves to feel guilty; an agent S is attributability blameworthy for X only if it is fitting that S feels shame for X.
